EDF leads The Sustainability Consortium’s NGO working group.
The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) is a network of more than 100 global companies — featuring names like Unilever, Kellogg’s, Best Buy, L’Oreal — working to create healthier products for people and the planet. Scientific American ranked the consortium one of the “Top Ten World Changing Ideas of 2012.”
The consortium has tapped leading scientists to develop a database of “hot spots” where consumer products cause the greatest harm. EDF lends its environmental expertise to push the consortium toward concrete action. For example, EDF helped Walmart take the first step by linking compensation to sustainability objectives for its buyers. This is the kind of action that could transform the whole retail sector.
The Sustainability Index was created by TSC and Walmart to develop measurement and reporting systems for product sustainability. See how Walmart is using The Sustainability Index to set a new global retail standard for the 21st century.
The vision of The Sustainability Consortium is to advance science to drive a new generation of innovative products and supply networks that address environmental, social, and economic imperatives. EDF is working closely with the TSC to provide the science and business expertise needed to ensure more sustainable supply chains and reduced emissions in the future.
