Suzano – Yu Tian – 2025
Summary
Will Tian developed a roadmap enabling Suzano to assess entry into the sustainable aviation fuel market.
Goals
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a key pathway for reducing emissions in the aviation sector. Seeking to explore opportunities to utilize its forestry residues and assess entry into the SAF market, the Brazilian pulp producer Suzano engaged Will Tian to conduct a feasibility study for a potential SAF project.
Solutions
Will addressed the challenge through a three-part approach:
1) External analysis: Conducted a comprehensive review of SAF regulations, technological pathways, and market dynamics at both global and regional levels.
2) Value chain mapping: Compiled a database of approximately 50 SAF projects and mapped major stakeholders along the value chain, from feedstock suppliers to airlines. Developed detailed case studies to inform long-term strategic planning.
3) Roadmap design: Built production scenarios drawing on recent techno-economic studies and internal consultations. The roadmap included required inputs and processes, alongside environmental analysis and financial analysis.
Potential Impact
By integrating SAF production with its pulp mills and leveraging available external incentives, Suzano could produce SAF that meets international renewable energy standards at a cost comparable to traditional jet fuel. This would support Suzano’s sustainability commitments while generating additional revenue from low-emission biofuels, positioning the company as both a driver of biomass market expansion and a reference point for innovative bioeconomy solutions.
