Climate Policy News You Can Use — November 2024

Dear Colleagues,

The recent US election marks a shift in government and new approaches to climate policy. As I’m sure you’ve seen, President-elect Trump has named individuals for key cabinet positions like Chris Wright for the Department of Energy and Representative Lee Zeldin for the Environmental Protection Agency. During this transition, it is important for businesses to uphold and promote their net-zero commitments as key economic drivers, and the role of policy to meet those goals.

As the new administration and Congress prepare to take office, we will actively advocate for the preservation of the regulatory standards established over the past year, including those related to vehicles and power plants, while also promoting the economic benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act. Our team is prepared to engage in discussion about future plans and policies with businesses as you strategize for the upcoming administration. We are committed to collaborating with businesses and policymakers to advocate for effective climate policies that support economic prosperity and keep us on the path to net zero emissions. As we continue to prepare for next year, we invite you to reach out so we can discuss your priorities!

New Resource: Trade Association Assessment Best Practices Guide

With a potentially lighter regulatory and policy agenda on the horizon, this presents a valuable opportunity to align internally on policy priorities that support your company’s sustainability commitments and externally with your trade associations.

That is why EDF has put together a new guide that brings together the best practices and resources by businesses and non-profits that companies can utilize when conducting their own assessments of their trade associations. It features a robust resource section with examples and guidance on setting climate policy priorities, developing methodologies to assess trades, which ones to assess, and options to hold accountable those that have been deemed misaligned with your climate policy priorities. No matter where you are on your trade association assessment journey, this guide has the best-in class resources to aid your work and is a live repository that will continue to be updated as additional reports and related resources come out.

Take Action:

  • Check out the new “Assess Your Trade Associations” guide.
  • Assess your trade associations against your climate policy priorities to address any misalignment.
  • Begin to have conversations with your trade association on how they are approaching climate policy next year.
