BrandSafway – Christian Dadzie – 2025

Christian Dadzie developed a data-driven roadmap to reduce fuel consumption and emissions across BrandSafway’s fleet.

BrandSafway’s vehicle and equipment fleet represents the company’s largest source of Scope 1 emissions and a major driver of fuel costs. Christian’s project focused on identifying scalable strategies to reduce fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions across North American operations. The resulting roadmap is designed to help BrandSafway build a compelling business case for sustainability while advancing broader goals around operational efficiency and environmental leadership.

Christian approached the challenge through a three-part analysis that combined behavioral, organizational, and technological insights:
1. Behavioral Analysis: Analyzed telematics data to quantify the fuel, cost, and emissions impacts of negative driver behaviors (idling, harsh driving, and speeding.)
2. Organizational Analysis: Evaluated vehicle utilization and assignments to identify opportunities to optimize fleet use for both efficiency and sustainability outcomes.
3. Technological Analysis: Developed a tool to model the financial and emissions impact of idle-reduction and driver-assistance technologies. Together, these efforts resulted in a roadmap built on data-driven insights to guide future fleet optimization and decarbonization efforts.

The analysis quantified approximately $1.5 million in potential cost avoidance over a 12-month period, and up to 3,400 metric tons of CO? emissions, revealing that driver behavior changes could have a significant impact on both operating costs and environmental impacts.  A composite scoring framework identified regional priorities and tailored interventions, while improved utilization metrics will help identify vehicles for reassignment or retirement. Among technologies evaluated, idle-reduction solutions, notably engine shut-off systems, offer the clearest near-term opportunity, with 2-5-year paybacks and scalable savings across BrandSafway’s high-idle regions.
