ReNew Power – Afshan Ameer – 2025
Summary
Afshan Ameer strengthened ReNew Energy’s ESG and sustainability strategy by quantifying Scope 3 emissions, authoring the company’s inaugural ESG and Sustainability Manual, drafting ReNew’s water, waste and environmental management policies, conducting comprehensive peer benchmarking and mapping for Business Responsibility & Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), and designing a year-long engagement program for Climate & Sustainability Champions, expediting ReNew’s Net Zero 2040 roadmap.
Goals
During her Climate Corps fellowship at ReNew Energy Global PLC, Afshan Ameer aimed to strengthen the company’s ESG and sustainability foundation by developing tools and processes that could integrate climate action into business operations and culture. Her primary goals were threefold: first, to create a unified reference that would bring together ReNew’s diverse sustainability frameworks and policies; second, to enhance the company’s greenhouse-gas (GHG) accounting practices, particularly around Scope 3 emissions to improve data accuracy and enable development of a decarbonization roadmap; and third, to cultivate employee ownership of sustainability through structured engagement initiatives. These objectives aligned closely with ReNew’s broader mission to achieve Net Zero by 2040.
Solutions
To meet these goals, Afshan developed ReNew’s first ESG & Sustainability Manual, consolidating all frameworks and policies into one accessible reference document. She built a robust Scope 3 GHG inventory, applying global emission factors to identify decarbonization hotspots, and also achieved third-party limited assurance for the same. Additionally, she drafted key environmental, OHS, water, and waste-management policies aligned with international standards. Afshan supported ReNew’s CII-ITC Sustainability Awards submission and led the voluntary BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting) mapping for the company’s second Integrated Report. To embed climate thinking across teams, she curated the Climate and Sustainability Champions program and organized company-wide World Environment Day initiatives, driving employee participation and behavioral change.
Potential Impact
Afshans work advanced ReNews ESG maturity by creating lasting tools for data transparency, governance, and engagement. The ESG Manual and policies provide a unified framework to guide future sustainability decisions. The Scope 3 inventory establishes a foundation for emission-reduction planning and decarbonization roadmaps, while the Climate Champions initiative builds internal ownership of climate action. Together, these outcomes strengthen ReNew’s ability to deliver on its Net Zero 2040 goals and position it as a leader in India’s clean-energy transition.
