Roche Diagnostics – Xinle Wang – 2024

Xinle Wang contributes to Roche’s sustainability through waste management and environmental impact quantification tools development.

As a global leader in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, Roche offers a range of products and services aimed at addressing health concerns. However, these offerings may negatively impact the health and safety of employees, the public, and the environment. In order to achieve sustainability development, support its 10-year ambition, and achieve SHE goal 2024, Roche Diagnostic Suzhou has enlisted Xinle Wang to contribute to its sustainability projects.

Xinle contributes to sustainability through two projects:

  • Waste Reduction. Based on the 2024 waste reduction target and criteria, Xinle quantified and sorted the waste generated by the RDSZ in 2023 and performed a traceability analysis for each waste type to identify waste reduction opportunities. Waste can be reduced through internal reuse within the factory or through external vendors to have transformation in treatment methods.
  • Eco-balance Calculator. Eco-balance is Roche’s index for assessing environmental impact. Xinle created a template framework for input, sorted out parameters required for calculation, and developed a calculator that provides immediate output upon input. Results are presented in the form of visual charts. She also analyzed the environmental impact of the factory in 2023 and gave suggestions.

By searching for waste reduction opportunities in hazardous and non-hazardous waste, RDSZ reduced 410 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and saved $50,000 in costs through actions. Partial waste reduction actions improve delivery. The Eco-balance calculator has improved the computational efficiency of Roche’s key index Eco-points. The visualized charts created visually represent the actual situation of resource consumption and emissions in the factory, providing direction for the sustainable development of the factory.
