Kingfisher – Meijiang Liu – 2023

Goals

Kingfisher is working towards reducing their Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 38% by 2025/26, and they are employing the use of renewable materials in manufacturing product components to help achieve this target. They have already incorporated recycled PP materials into some of their home improvement products, and their next goal is to explore the feasibility of using recycled metals.

Solutions

To drive the application of renewable materials and achieve carbon reduction targets, Kingfisher plans to calculate the carbon footprint of products that utilize recycled plastics and assess the emissions reduction achieved.

They also aim to investigate the feasibility of using recycled metals. The current plan involves researching the existing certification certificates and standards for metals such as iron, aluminum, and copper, and compiling information on how suppliers can obtain these certificates or collaborate with suppliers who have already obtained them.

Potential Impact

The emissions reduction achieved through the use of recycled plastics in product carbon footprints primarily depends on the percentage of recycled plastic content in the product. It is estimated that incorporating 30% of renewable materials by weight can reduce carbon emissions during the production phase by 10%-35%.

As for recycled metals, research indicates that compared to virgin metals, recycled metals can save 90% of carbon emissions during the material production stage, making them highly beneficial for carbon reduction initiatives. In particular, ASI aluminum certification demonstrates strong feasibility in China.
