Climate Corps Projects

KAS Shanghai – Meiyu Xiong – 2023

Goals

Kmart Group is committed to minimizing both upstream and downstream emissions, while the household appliances is one of the primary cause of Kmart Scope 3 carbon emissions. have a clear understanding of further approach, appliances energy efficiency benchmarking and carbon footprint accounting were conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current state and identify potential carbon reduction opportunities.

Solutions

Meiyu Xiong completed the projects via a three-part process:

  • Capture data from vendors. Benchmarking analysis and carbon emission accounting require data as prerequisite. Meiyu communicated with 30 vendors and gathered data on 137 products from them.
  • Identify carbon reduction proposalsat usage stage of products with benchmarking results and scenarios. Meiyu innovatively introduced the scorecard method to compare products based on factors such as price, energy efficiency, and function. A total of 12 scenarios were established for exploring the carbon reduction and potential impacted turnover.
  • Identify carbon reduction opportunities at manufacturing stage of product. Meiyu calculated carbon footprint for product life cycle by LCA method and Simapro software.

Potential Impact

By improving appliances towards benchmarking products under fast-declining pace of emission factor for electricity, a total of 4 million tons carbon would be reduced within the next 7 years, meanwhile maintaining the least potential turnover loss for Kmart.

Via green electricity use via manufacturing process and the recycled plastics application for the products, vendor would result in the reduction of 5 million kilograms carbon at manufacturing stage of Kmart heaters each year.
