Decathlon Group – Xinrui Liu – 2022

Goals

In order to better understand the energy consumption of suppliers’ in-plant transport, assess and reduce the GHG emissions from road transport, we focused mainly on Decathlon’s GHG emissions from transport sources, and proposed RE alternatives as well as transformation options for logistics management.

Solutions

  • Elaborated to suppliers the specifications for energy consumption data submitted to Decathlon
  • Regularly updated the emission factor database and collected more detailed logistics information such as actual loads
  • Assessed the GHG mitigation potential based on two indicators: ET (quotient of GHG emissions to shop sales) and EIT (quotient of GHG emission intensity to shop sales), and adjusted the frequency of goods transported from the warehouse to the shop accordingly
  • Replaced diesel trucks with hydrogen trucks on trunk routes, with priority given to the Dongguan-Yanjiao line
  • Replaced poorly equipped vehicles with electric trucks on feeder routes with a distance of less than 100 km
  • Replaced diesel with biodiesel to further reduce GHG emissions.

Potential Impact

  • Improved the quality of energy consumption data from Decathlon suppliers
  • More accurately estimated GHG emissions from transport sources, and effectively avoided over-estimation of emissions
  • Established indicators to determine the inter-store mitigation potential, and facilitated the development of a better logistics management system
  • Significantly reduced GHG emissions from inland road transport.
