Dolby – Trevor Harper – 2022

Goals

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. has set an ambitious decarbonization goal of carbon neutrality for itself and its value chain by 2030. An interim goal of procuring 100% renewable electricity by 2025 to help them on this journey has also been set. Dolby enlisted Trevor Harper, a recent Master of Sustainability Solutions graduate from Arizona State University, to help develop strategies to achieve these goals. In addition, Trevor supported Dolby in preparing for its first Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Climate Report.

Solutions

Trevor employed two main strategies to effectively support Dolby:

Cross Functional Collaboration: Trevor was actively involved in expanding Dolby’s environmental sustainability outreach within the company. By engaging with internal stakeholders across the company, Harper gained insights into the many business units. He participated in weekly cross-functional meetings to help ensure internal collaboration and alignment, establish Science Based Targets, and develop auditable data collection process improvements.

Gap Analysis: Trevor leveraged a gap analysis of the (CDP) 2022 Climate Change Report to highlight opportunities for continued success within Dolby’s sustainability program. He emphasized the need for improved governance around climate change, data collection processes, and helped facilitate an overall expansion of sustainability awareness at Dolby.

Potential Impact

Trevor’s gap analysis will prepare Dolby for the 2023 CDP Report that will be scored and submitted publicly, and will inform improvements in governance, data collection, alignment with the Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures (TCFD), and environmental sustainability practices. Dolby is in the early stages of its sustainability journey and has a unique opportunity to build a robust foundation. By implementing Trevor’s recommendations, Dolby has a chance to insert itself as a leader in this space and embed sustainability into its core strategies and business practices.
