Climate Corps Projects

Lyft, Inc. – Lukas Gutierrez – 2022

Goals

Lyft is a transportation network company (TNC) committed to driving carbon out of the transportation sector. As such, both managing and reporting on emissions are critical components of Lyft’s overall sustainability strategy. For 2022, Lyft enlisted EDF Climate Corps Fellow Lukas Gutierrez to advance these sustainability priorities:

  1. Delivered a third-party verified GHG inventory for 2021.
  2. Support efforts to establish Science-Based Targets.
  3. Support efforts to acquire higher-quality data for Scope 3 emissions.

Solutions

Building upon Lyft’s previous EDF Climate Corps Fellows’ work, Lukas connected with various internal stakeholders and scoped out Lyft’s operational activities. Lukas then performed a deep carbon footprint analysis and developed a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory according to the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

To acquire better scope 3 emissions data, Lukas connected with cross-functional and external stakeholders. Additionally, he created an enhanced methodology for future inventory work that focuses on gathering supplier data.

To support the effort of setting science-based targets, Lukas researched the SBTi Protocol and calculated SBTs using the absolute contraction approach and the well below two degrees scenario for scopes 1, 2, and 3.

Potential Impact

A verified GHG inventory accounts for all the emissions sources Lyft is responsible for. It also helps identify major sources of opportunity for emission reductions. Additionally, a GHG inventory demonstrates Lyft’s commitment to transparency and climate action.

By supporting better scope 3 data collection processes, Lyft will be able to make better-informed decisions regarding emissions and internal policies. Lastly, by engaging with their suppliers, Lyft will be able to work with these suppliers to assess possible emissions reduction strategies.
