Schlumberger – Andrew Harrison – 2019

Goals 

Schlumberger, a worldwide provider of cutting-edge technology for reservoir characterization, drilling, production and processing for the oil and gas industry enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Andrew Harrison to reduce energy consumption at its Schlumberger-Doll Research Center in Boston. Schlumberger was also interested in deploying energy efficiency initiatives across its facilities to reduce costs and pursue carbon savings.

Solutions

After conducting an in-depth analysis of historical utility data, Harrison identified savings in the laboratory HVAC systems. Due to large air exchange rates and fume hood exhaust volumes, Schlumberger’s laboratories were placing stress on the facility-wide HVAC system, leading to increased utility bills. Harrison implemented controls system changes to reduce air exchange rates for a safer and more energy efficient lab operation. Harrison introduced Schlumberger to a utility-sponsored retro-commissioning and building performance optimization program, which will reduce Schlumberger’s energy consumption for years to come.

Potential Impact

Harrison’s airflow reduction project is expected to save the Schlumberger-Doll Research Center an estimated $100,000 in total costs and has the potential to reduce annual CO2e emissions by 380 metric tons. Based on his recommendations, the Global Stewardship and Facilities teams have a strategy to implement companywide energy efficiency initiatives.
