KKR – Laura Marincola – 2015

Goals

KKR, a leading global investment firm that manages investments across multiple asset classes, enlisted Laura Marincola to help strengthen the suite of resources it uses to identify, evaluate and implement energy and resource efficiency improvements. This goal included the creation and development of assessment tools for KKR and KKR’s private equity portfolio companies to aid in measuring and benchmarking their energy performance.

KKR’s ongoing Green Portfolio Program (GPP) involves partnering with and guiding portfolio companies through the process of executing green solutions and practices. It was under this program’s framework that Marincola sought to provide tools that support and drive the planning of energy and resource efficiency projects.

Solutions

After collecting and analyzing energy data as well as identifying selected portfolio companies’ needs, Marincola together with the GPP team determined the steps to be taken and content that the tools should have. Marincola then designed different benchmarking and assessment tools and piloted them with select portfolio companies’ data. In this way, she identified potential energy and cost savings as well as other energy and resource best practices. She also found opportunities for improvement and shared her results with the portfolio companies. Furthermore, Marincola together with the GPP team suggested to the participating portfolio companies the potential actions that could be taken in order to improve their energy and resource efficiency.

Potential Impact

Because of Marincola’s work, KKR could now use the assessment and benchmarking tools across their diverse, private equity and real estate portfolios, and in this way, identify further energy, cost and resource savings and assist portfolio companies with environmental strategy.
