El Paso Housing Authority – Nicholas Lopez – 2012
Goals
Nico Lopez was asked to study four buildings owned and managed by the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) to optimize their energy efficiency.
Solutions
He identified three HVAC and chiller retrofits that would save energy and money, and proposed an energy efficiency awareness video that could reduce energy use by 2 percent at the buildings, saving $1,200. To check the viability of on-site renewable energy generation, Lopez also performed an extensive microgrid analysis on the four buildings and HACEP Central Office.
Potential Impact
Lopez’s projects could save more than $280,000 over 15 years, as well as 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and one million kilowatt hours of electricity every year.
