Cricket Communications – Rohini Sankapal – 2012

Goals

Rohini Sankapal worked with Cricket Communications to find the most efficient technological framework for the company’s switch centers.

Solutions

She modeled a switch center optimization framework, factoring in elements such as energy use, cost, and the need to maintain uninterrupted network operations. Rohini also audited the implementation of lighting retrofits recommended by Anjali Gattani, Cricket’s 2011 Climate Corps fellow.

Potential Impact

Sankapal found savings of nearly 15.5 million kilowatt hours annually, as well as nearly $1.2 million in energy cost savings and over 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emission savings. As of August 2012, the retrofits had saved Cricket nearly 130,000 kilowatt hours, equal to more than $15,000 and nearly 80 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
