Climate Corps Projects

Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Labs) – Zoe Ripecky – 2019

Goals

Abbott Laboratories, a global health care company, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Zoe Ripecky to develop a roadmap for reducing carbon emissions. Abbott was also interested in assessing transitional, physical and potential market risks.

Solutions

The 2030 Energy Roadmap for reducing emissions required Ripecky to:

  • analyze energy data from over 100 global locations.
  • utilize Abbott’s global carbon footprint and energy data to project the growth of Scope 2 emissions
  • Determine which sites were viable for onsite renewable energy projects by evaluating the energy savings of over 100 facilities.

Zoe then developed a targeted Renewable Energy Credit strategy and recommended a path to buying renewable energy offsite. She then mapped the business units most vulnerable to energy-related risks based on regulatory and market changes. The final energy strategy roadmap combined all of these factors into a balanced business plan.

Potential Impact

Ripecky produced a 2030 Energy Roadmap to provide a clear path for Abbott to successfully achieve aggressive carbon reduction targets. Implementing the Energy Roadmap, could potentially reduce over 30% carbon dioxide by 2030. The capital projects identified in the 2030 Energy Roadmap could potentially save Abbott millions of dollars in energy costs per year.
