Akamai Technologies – Pranab Ranjan – 2012

Goals

Akamai Technologies, a cloud computing service provider, hired Pranab Ranjan to identify energy cost reduction opportunities and to assess currently operating energy efficiency initiatives in its datacenters. Akamai operates one of the world’s largest distributed cloud computing platforms, with more than 105,000 servers in 78 countries. These servers are hosted almost exclusively in third-party “colocation,” or multitenant, data centers.

Solutions

Ultimately Ranjan recommended educating colocation providers about efficiency measures and potential cost savings, incorporating efficiency metrics into Akamai’s colocation selection process and installing blanking panels.

Potential Impact

These steps could save Akamai as much as 10 percent of its total colocation costs.
