Amazon.com, Inc. – Nandin Natsagdorj – 2022

Goals

Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge – a commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. EDF Climate Corps Fellow Nandin Natsagdorj was brought on by Amazon Robotics team to recommend a supplier engagement strategy and roadmap.

Solutions

Nandin conducted industry research on supply chain sustainability reporting and frameworks. She proposed KPIs that could be part of an internal scorecard, and Sustainability Action Plans to drive action with suppliers. She collaborated with commodity managers to understand pain points. The major obstacle was education. She included education as part of the roadmap, and provided educational materials (e.g., emission scopes, life cycle assessments, etc.). 

Potential Impact

As Amazon continues to scale globally, the impact of the supply chain emissions is a critical component for the net zero carbon 2040 goal. Nandin’s strategy and roadmap will help frame Amazon Robotics’ long-term initiative to decarbonize its suppliers.
