APL Logistics – Caroline Murphy – 2022

Goals

APL Logistics (APLL) is a leading third-party logistics provider for customers across the retail, automotive, and industrial verticals. As a key part of customers’ supply chain, APLL is committed to delivering premier, sustainable Order Management solutions. APLL recognizes its duty to measure and reduce the company’s impact on the environment and respond to the urgency to reduce global supply chain emissions. APLL enlisted Caroline Murphy to measure the first baseline of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data in accordance with the GHG Protocol. She was also tasked to propose ambitious Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions absolute reduction targets and facility-level strategies to meet those goals.

Solutions

Murphy first became familiar with APLL’s business model, data collection process, and 140+ site locations in order to create a calculation template in alignment with APLL’s current data collection format.

Murphy then calculated company-wide Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for 2022 to-date and developed a tool for the APLL team to easily complete the baseline inventory through the remainder of the year. After identifying a leverage point for reducing GHG emissions, she calculated the potential GHG emissions impact of warehouse equipment electrification.

Murphy projected emissions for the remainder of 2022 to inform APLL’s 2025 and 2030 GHG emissions reduction goals. She researched competitor and customer supply chain targets to ensure APLL is ahead of industry expectations. Murphy also modeled a projection of GHG emissions reduction necessary for APLL to align with the Paris Agreement’s global targets to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Finally, she drafted an Inventory Management Plan for APLL to use internally and for future third-party baseline verification.

Potential Impact

With a Scope 1 and 2 GHG inventory, APLL is now enabled to reduce the top drivers of GHG emissions at global warehouse and office sites. By striving for Murphy’s emissions reduction targets and implementing the recommended reduction, APLL can potentially reduce a significant amount of CO2-equivalent emissions from the baseline year over year through 2030.

In setting ambitious absolute emissions reduction targets, APLL will be prepared to exceed customer expectations, compete with industry peers for valued business, and set a Science Based Target after measuring Scope 3 GHG emissions in the coming years.
