Baxter International – Vibhor Khanna – 2013

Goals

In 2013, Vibhor Khanna was brought on as an EDF Climate Corps fellow with Baxter International Inc. (Baxter) to research, analyze and prepare a report on existing and emerging carbon taxation and carbon market-based trading systems around the world.

Solutions

After evaluating this carbon information, understanding the complexities of Baxter operations, conducting several stakeholder interviews and performing peer benchmarking, Khanna provided Baxter with a strategic roadmap the company could use to better manage its carbon footprint. As part of this effort, Khanna created a carbon burden estimation model to calculate the additional financial burden with various projects due to emerging global carbon taxation and trading systems.

Additionally, Khanna explored opportunities for Baxter to expand investment in on-site renewable energy systems. He created a renewable energy valuation model that could help Baxter determine the advantages of this investment, which include mitigation of energy price spikes and possible utility surcharges, as well as, the increased environmental benefits.
