Climate Corps Projects

Boston Scientific – Srihari Balu Balasubramanian – 2015

Goals

Boston Scientific, a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Srihari Balasubramanian to work on three projects: 1) an energy management training module for all facilities personnel, 2) an energy maturity model that would benchmark energy use at all the manufacturing sites and 3) a financial scorecard that could be used to compare energy-efficiency projects for investment.

Solutions

After viewing all the options available in the market, Balasubramanian came up with a customized training pack for Boston Scientific in partnership with Schneider Electric. Introductory as well as advanced energy management courses were developed and put onto a flexible (online) resource, which provides recognized certification once the courses have been completed.

For the energy management maturity model, Balasubramanian worked with his manager, Noel Finnerty and a research student at the National University of Galway, Ireland to build a maturity matrix. Balasubramanian also conducted hour-long survey with each manufacturing site owner. The results of this survey were insightful and identified areas for focus at a global level as well as a site level.

Balasubramanian also developed a financial scorecard that takes into account the return on investment, carbon emissions impact and business continuity impact of energy-efficiency projects.

Potential Impact

Balasubramanian’s projects have set the foundation for Boston Scientific to become more energy efficient. For instance, completing the energy maturity model could be an annual exercise to track progress. Also, the results of the manufacturing site survey are scheduled to be presented at the BSC – Global Facilities Summit in September.
