Burlington – Julia Millot – 2022

Goals

Burlington Stores, Inc. is considering the submission of a Science-Based Target. Prior to this submission, there arose a need to further investigate relevant Scope 3 impact. In an effort to dive deeper into their carbon footprint, Burlington enlisted the help of Julia Millot to build upon the efforts already underway at Burlington to identify relevant Scope 3 categories and quantify their GHG emissions.

Solutions

Julia approached the project in two phases:

  • Identify Scope 3 categories that may be relevant to Burlington Stores. By using GHG Protocol criteria and conducting a thorough peer benchmark, Julia worked with the Burlington team to identify additional relevant Scope 3 categories.
  • Calculate emissions for relevant Scope 3 categories. Julia enhanced relationships with internal teams to obtain the activity data necessary for calculations. She analyzed data such as spend on purchased goods, employee commuting patterns and weights of units sold and applied them to relevant emission factors to calculate possible total greenhouse gas emissions.

Potential Impact

Julia and the team found that expanding Scope 3 from the three categories currently being measured to the additional categories identified could substantially increase Scope 3’s share of Burlington’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This establishes a more comprehensive baseline for future Scope 3 reporting.

As a result, Burlington Stores can measure the impact of their footprint while disclosing more to their stakeholders. This will enable them to develop strategies that reduce supply chain emissions while getting ahead of future regulations.
