BYD (China) – Rucheng Xiong – 2018

Goals

BYD China (BYD) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of batteries, charging infrastructure and electric vehicles. The company has made a practice to reduce its impact on the environment, in which energy, greenhouse and waste managements are the main measures. In order to address the challenges of high energy consumption and pollution in one of their assembly factories, the company enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Rucheng Xiong to work with the production team and recommend solutions that would improve those conditions.

Solutions

After analyzing energy use data and interviewing the facilities staff, Xiong determined that the cooling and production equipment offered the most promising opportunities to reduce energy use. He implemented a detailed check of all equipment which resulted in the initiation of eight projects designed toward improving energy efficiency in those areas.

Potential Impact

If implemented, Xiong’s projects could save BYD $1.08 million Yuan in net operational costs over their lifetimes. Annually, they could save 670,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and 350 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
