BYD (China) – Tianxiang Shi – 2018

Goals

BYD, a high-tech manufacturer of electric vehicles in China, has been committed to energy-saving and emission-reduction company-wide. To further their goals, BYD enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Tianxiang Shi to find cost-effective solutions that will help one of its assembly plants reduce energy consumption.

Solutions

After collecting and analyzing the energy use data of the plant, Shi worked with the Energy and Environment Team to present several projects. These included:

• Replacing energy-intensive devices such as halogen lamps and compressed air pipelines and implementing regular maintenance on those systems.

• Implementing new cooling methods in order to improve poor air conditions in the plant.

• Setting up photovoltaic power generation on the roof of the plant to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

In order to improve BYD’s energy management, Shi created a mathematical model of single product energy consumption.

Potential Impact

If implemented, Shi’s projects could save BYD $1.08 million Yuan in net operational costs over their lifetimes. Annually, they could save 668,038 kilowatt hours of electricity and 350 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, improved air quality in the plant will also improve work-force efficiency.
