CA Technologies – Nicholas Zuba – 2014

Goals

Nicholas Zuba spent his summer working with CA Technologies, a company that is already strategically committed to sustainability. Toward that end, CA has a goal of reducing its overall carbon emissions, which has involved making their 778,000 square-foot facility in Islandia, NY more energy efficient.

Solutions

Under the guidance of CA’s global engineering manager and northeast regional facilities manager, Zuba recommended several energy-saving project opportunities for CA to consider for implementation, including installing a chiller variable frequency drive, installing and integrating building controls, lighting upgrades and changing fan schedules and parking rules. Zuba also looked at additional cost savings opportunities through the use of an energy dashboard. By transmitting real time energy data – showing electric and natural gas usage, for example – a dashboard could help to reduce energy consumption by counteracting energy anomalies and changing behavioral use of energy.

Potential Impact

Overall, if these projects are implemented over the next seven years, they could save the company an estimated 3.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity, nearly 6,100 therms of natural gas and almost 2,500 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, which translates to nearly $440,000 in savings per year.
