City of Atlanta – Andrew Rector – 2012
Goals
As part of the City of Atlanta’s commitment to the nationwide Better Building Challenge, which aims to reduce energy use in buildings 20 percent by 2020, Andrew Rector spent his EDF Climate Corps fellowship working on a planned LED lighting upgrade at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The Atlanta Airport is the world’s busiest, serving roughly 89 million passengers every year.
Solutions
With the help of Atlanta’s Office of Sustainability and the Airport’s Innovations and Facilities teams, Rector completed an inventory of existing lighting systems to establish baseline energy consumption and energy costs, which will enable Atlanta to fully evaluate the economic and environmental benefits of proposed energy efficiency projects. The baselines document the amount of money, electricity and carbon dioxide emissions that could be saved by switching from fluorescent and metal halide lights to more-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Potential Impact
Annually, the LED project could save the Atlanta Airport hundreds of thousands of dollars in utility costs.
