Claflin University – William Emanuel – 2012
Goals
William Emanuel was partnered with Claflin University to leverage efficiency opportunities critical to its membership in the President’s Climate Commitment, which it signed in 2011.
Solutions
After analyzing actions Claflin considered taking to lower its utility costs, Emanuel confirmed that they were in line with industry standards. Emanuel also worked with faculty, Food Services and the Wellness Committee at Claflin to develop projects focused on sustainability and health, such as a color coding system for food to reduce obesity on campus.
Potential Impact
By managing demand charges, power factors and rate schedules in six of its buildings, Claflin could save $300,000, over 2,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide and over 3.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year.
