Clean Energy New Hampshire – Laura Ospina – 2024

SummaryLaura Ospina estimated the negative economic impacts of New Hampshire’s EV charging infrastructure gap to support the case for strategic multi-stakeholder Investments in EV Charging Infrastructure.GoalsClean Energy NH (CENH), home of the Drive Electric NH (DENH) Coalition, is increasingly concerned that New Hampshire’s public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure lags significantly behind that of neighboring states. They are worried about the potential effects this could have on the state’s competitiveness and climate goals. CENH brought in Laura Ospina to evaluate potential economic losses and to build a case for strategic multi-stakeholder investments in EV charging infrastructure in the state.Solutions -Assessing the Infrastructure Gap: Determining the current gap in charging infrastructure in New Hampshire needed to support the growing number of electric vehicles projected through 2030.
-Conducting Regional Simulations: Using a comprehensive methodological approach to run simulations across New Hampshire’s seven tourism regions, estimating the number of vehicles that would stop coming to the state and calculating the resulting economic losses, including sector-specific impacts and spillover effects on the overall economy.
-Exploring Policy and Funding Solutions: Researching policy approaches and funding mechanisms to promote the development of adequate charging infrastructure in the state. –
-Building the Economic Case: Making a strong economic case for public policy intervention and public-private strategic investments by analyzing barriers to EV market entry and presenting empirical evidence on the cost-effectiveness of public investments in charging infrastructure.Potential ImpactThese estimates, along with her comprehensive reports on overcoming barriers to entry in the EV market and extensive research on policy approaches and funding mechanisms, have equipped CENH with the data and tools needed to effectively engage stakeholders and promote multi-stakeholder investment in EV charging infrastructure across the state. This effort contributes to both CENH/DENH’s mission to enhance competitiveness and unlock environmental and economic benefits for all communities in New Hampshire.
