Comcast – Nadim Rajabi – 2013

Goals

Nadim Rajabiwas asked spend the summer focused on building the business case for energy saving opportunities at Comcast’s greater Boston area facilities.

Solutions

Rajabi examined facilities including customer service centers in downtown Boston and regional data centers. He first calculated the power usage effectiveness (PUE) of multiple data centers. PUE is a ratio that measures the amount of power consumed by IT equipment versus cooling and building systems in a data center. By comparing PUE factors between data centers, Rajabi was able to prioritize a subset of regional data centers to focus his efforts on.

Within the identified data centers, Rajabi worked to evaluate improvements in cooling systems, including improved airflow dynamics and air conditioner retrofits, as well as the potential for energy management software on call center PCs.

Potential Impact

If Rajabi’s projects are fully implemented, Comcast could reduce emissions by over 1,000 metric tons per year and save over $600,000 over project lifetimes. As the first EDF Climate Corps fellow at Comcast, Rajabi set the stage for future energy efficiency and conservation programs at Comcast Corporation.
