Con Edison – Sid Sharma – 2016

Goals

Con Edison has 3.4 million customers and is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States. When it wanted to explore innovative, high-impact business models for electrifying transportation it enlisted EDF Climate Corps Fellow Sid Sharma to devise tailored solutions for the company’s unique service territory– single family homes, dense multi-use buildings, and a large number of high mileage fleets.

Solutions

Sid’s efforts were three-pronged. To get a firm understanding of the EV value chain, he researched key players and international best practices. Sid synthesized the macro and sector-specific research to evaluate utility-led pilots, which informed his recommendations. He then created several sophisticated financial models, incorporating over one hundred variables, to determine first and 3rd party cash flows and lifetime value for individually and fleet owned vehicles.

Potential Impact

All three pieces–the foundational research, strategic analysis and financial quantification– have positioned Con Edison to make significant, positive impacts in the EV market and meet its carbon reduction goals.
