CSX – Felise Man – 2014

Goals

Felise Man spent her summer as an EDF Climate Corps fellow for CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSX) building tools to support a tailored energy management plan for CSX facilities through 2020. The main objective was to establish a framework that supports CSX’s strategic approach to identify, plan and prioritize current and future energy efficiency projects to optimize resources and ensure environmental targets are met.

Solutions

In order to provide a comprehensive strategic approach, Man analyzed past and future capital plans, CSX’s utility spending profiles, federal and state incentive programs and availability, as well as future directions for electricity pricing and greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation for all states in which CSX operates. Man also developed an energy management software tool to track energy efficiency projects and spending, benchmark electricity usage and savings and project total avoided carbon emissions and renewable energy implementation against CSX’s environmental targets. In addition, this software tool could be used for reporting and allow for collaboration across business units.

Potential Impact

As a result of this work, Man has devised a systematic and forward-looking energy management plan to identify and track future projects and ensure that these projects are optimized for cost and energy savings.
