Cummins – Rachel Bourne – 2010

Goals

Rachel Bourne spent the summer of 2010 as an EDF Climate Corps fellow at Cummins’ central Indiana headquarters. As a dual degree MBA candidate at Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University and M. Global Management Candidate at Thunderbird, Rachel’s primary responsibility was to work with cross-functional teams to develop a strategic building standards plan for Cummins.

Solutions

Rachel ultimately helped develop the Cummins Global Building Program and Business Case. The Global Building Program consists of an energy efficient and high performing building policy with discipline-specific architecture and engineering standards critical to Cummins’ development plans. The Program was developed concurrently with the Business Case to determine if those standards pay for themselves in direct, quantifiable ways.

Potential Impact

The Global Building Program is now an integral part of Cummins’ new project process. It will be constantly updated as new technologies come about and adapted for the various geographies in which Cummins builds. The firm is currently implementing the Program in 30 new buildings across its global portfolio. Moreover, the company hired Rachel on full-time as a corporate facilities engineer.
