Decathlon Group – Yaqiong Hao – 2021

Goals

Decathlon, a global sports apparel and equipment manufacturer and retailer that has been committed to sustainable development, proactively set the goal of CO2 emission reduction in 2026. In their actual operation, the CO2 emission’s resulting from customer and commuter travel accounts for a large percentage, which attracted the attention of management.

Currently, there is a lack of effective data investigation and statistics according to China’s actual situation. The project’s objective is to collect and analyze the CO2 emission impact data from employee commuter and customer travels to the local Decathlon China.

Solutions

Hao approached the challenge in three stages:

  1. Collect the data and calculate the CO2 emissions: Hao designed the questionnaires to collect the data from customers and teammates of Decathlon China and used the average-data method to calculate the CO2 emissions for both customer travel and commuter travel.
  2. Analysis of the current customer and commuter travel CO2 emissions: Hao analyzed the factors affecting customer and commuter travel CO2 emissions and compared the results. Hao also used word frequency analysis to identify the willingness to reduce the CO2 emissions from both customers and teammates of Decathlon.
  3. Analysis  of the CO2 reduction of both customer travel and commuter travel: Hao used sensitivity analysis to identify how the 1% of people who travel by car daily changed to other lower CO2 emission transport, how much CO2 emission will reduce yearly, and how many people the company should influence.

Potential Impact

Decathlon China customer travel CO2 emission has been estimated: Hao designed a dashboard which shows the total customer travel CO2 emission and each of the 260 stores can get their store’s data.
