EMC – Ian Lavery – 2009
Goals
Ian Lavery, a second year student at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, was placed at EMC Corporation in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The company, a global provider of information infrastructure systems and technology, employs more than 40,000 people and is “pretty sophisticated about energy savings,” Ian says. “All the low-hanging fruit was already picked.”
Solutions
Responding to the challenge, he identified several opportunities for improving energy efficiency in one of EMC’s buildings. Three of the projects included retro-commissioning the building’s control systems, installing window film and rolling out PC and Monitor Management software.
Potential Impact
Combined, these projects could reduce annual energy costs by approximately $443,000, cut almost 3 million kWh of electricity, and avoid 1,900 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
