Climate Corps Projects

facebook – David Wang – 2013

Goals

David Wang jumped into a wide variety energy and sustainability projects across campus, adopting Facebook’s motto of “move fast.” His major projects included performing an in-depth analysis of Facebook’s onsite solar cogeneration installations and leading an effort to optimize the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system on the campus’ largest building.

Solutions

Wang’s analysis of the cogeneration systems helped ensure that Facebook maximizes the return on its investment. Evaluation of a single building’s HVAC system led to the recommendation of several energy efficiency measures that are expected to significantly reduce annual energy costs. Beyond his primary projects, Wang devoted effort toward employee engagement and explored cross-functional projects to improve campus energy analytics. During the course of his fellowship, Wang consistently identified opportunities to improve Facebook’s ability to manage its energy use.

Potential Impact

Given that other buildings are similarly designed, a campus-wide rollout of recommended energy efficiency measures is estimated to yield significant savings.
