Floor and Decor – Ahmed Aliyu Ahmad – 2015

Goals

Ahmed Aliyu Ahmad spent his summer as an EDF Climate Corps fellow in the Atlanta area evaluating energy-efficiency projects for Floor and Decor, a specialty retailer of hard surface flooring. While Floor and Decor had previously engaged an EDF Climate Corps fellow, Tatyana Brown, to look into lighting projects, Ahmed was assigned a project to evaluate the potential savings from installing an Energy Management System (EMS) on their rooftop units (RTUs) to monitor and control the units as well as other equipment.

Solutions

Over the course of the fellowship, Ahmad analyzed Floor and Decor’s energy usage and engaged with different EMS vendors. Ahmad found the potential to reduce the energy consumption from the RTUs by 20 percent with the installation of the EMS systems, so he recommended following through with its implementation.

Potential Impact

Ahmad’s analysis showed that with the roll out of the EMS systems in Floor and Decor’s 50 stores, the company could possibly reduce more than 8.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, a significant savings in energy costs annually in addition to increased operational efficiencies.
