Groupon – Bridgid O'Boyle – 2022

Goals

Groupon enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Bridgid O’Boyle to support building a best-in-class ESG strategy and roadmap for reporting and disclosure. Bridgid was tasked with quantifying Groupon’s baseline for GHG emissions, establishing a foundation for ESG disclosure and reporting, and providing a persuasive business case for ESG initiatives at the company.

Solutions

To build a best-in-class ESG strategy for Groupon, Bridgid undertook 3 main projects:

  • Quantified and analyzed Groupon’s 2021 GHG emissions across 26 office locations and 3 data centers
  • Drafted sections of the company’s inaugural ESG report including SASB & GRI disclosures
  • Developed a strategy based on industry benchmarking exercises, results from Groupon’s materiality assessment, and an ESG SWOT analysis that provided pathways for increased climate action, recommendations for industry leading disclosure and reporting tactics, and a roadmap to further infuse ESG into the company’s business objectives

Potential Impact

By building a best-in-class ESG strategy for Groupon, Bridgid made a persuasive business case for how crystallizing sustainability commitments can have favorable outcomes both for Groupon as well as its external stakeholders.

Within the strategy, Bridgid included recommendations for greenhouse emissions reductions, climate targets, and expanded reporting and disclosure methods and demonstrated how they have the potential to reduce operational costs, attract investors, lower carbon emissions, retain top talent, and improve Groupon’s reputation among key stakeholders.
