Housing Authority of the City and County of Denver – Colin Krenitsky – 2014

Goals

Colin Krenitsky was hired as the Housing Authority of the City and Country of Denver’s 2014 EDF Climate Corps fellow. The housing authority signed up to reap energy savings and accellerate progress towards meeting its Better Buildings Challenge goals. 

Solutions

Krenitsky developed an Excel-based utility tracking model to identify housing units with high electricity, water or gas consumption to prioritize for energy audits. Krenitsky also researched and wrote a case study on the Denver Housing Authority’s self-managed energy performance contract (EPC), which upgraded 12 major sites and has saved the organization $2.5 million in utility expenses in the last year.

Additionally, Krenitsky developed a maintenance training tracking tool to simplify the management of energy conservation technology trainings related to the EPC. As part of the Denver Housing Authority’s participation in a joint HUD/EPA Energy Star Portfolio Manager pilot program for multifamily housing, Krenitsky led the implementation process to facilitate benchmarking and reporting.

Working with the Department of Energy, Krenitsky also managed the Denver Housing Authority’s inaugural data submission for the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge, consolidated portfolio-wide utility data and performed a weather normalization regression analysis. The Authority is well on its way to meeting its goal to reduce energy intensity by 20 percent in the next decade.
