Howard University – Enoruwa Diana Idugboe – 2012

Goals

Howard University, a 10,000-student historically black school in Washington, D.C., enlisted Enoruwa Diana Idugboe to identify energy and water efficiency opportunities in its dormitories.

Solutions

While working with Howard’s Office of Sustainability, Idugboe identified several potential no- and low-cost energy efficiency projects, such as a T12 to T8 fluorescent lighting retrofit, lighting sensors and vending misers. She also identified several low and no-cost water conservation projects, such as aerators for faucets, showers and baths. Idugboe also worked to obtain funding for implementation, successfully capturing $1 million from the D.C. Sustainable Energy Utility for her recommended T12 retrofit. This recovered 100 percent of the project’s costs.

Potential Impact

The projects Idugboe identified could save Howard about $1.5 million in net operating costs, 7,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 27 million gallons of water annually.
