ITC Ltd – Sanya Grover – 2021

Goals

ITC, a diversified conglomerate with businesses spanning FMCG, hotels, packaging, paperboards and specialty papers, and agri-business, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Sanya Grover to develop the blueprint for absolute emission reduction and Net Zero pathway. The project also entailed benchmarking performance of various ITC businesses with global and national peers.

Solutions

Sanya’s work entailed developing a thorough understanding of ITC’s emissions inventory across scope 1, 2, and 3. 

For Scope 3, her work focused on:

• Manufacturing related emissions covering Contract Manufacturing Units (CMUs).
• Transportation related emissions covering transportation of raw material, finished goods, and waste.
• Energy related emissions covering upstream GHG emissions from sourcing of fuel, electricity, etc.

For the above categories, Sanya developed emission calculation tools using available methodologies and emission factors and worked on estimating these emissions.

Sanya conducted a comprehensive review of peer practices, CDP disclosures, and other publications and presented her findings on benchmarking performance of various ITC businesses, coverage of scope 3 emissions by peer companies, key performance indicators, targets, and action plans.

Potential Impact

Sanya’s work provided a detailed understanding of scope 3 GHG emissions including practical estimation tools. Her findings from the peer review provided further context and insights for laying the foundation for ITCs’ absolute emission reduction strategy and Net Zero pathway.
