KAS Shanghai – Ruirong Chang – 2023

Goals

Kmart Group is working on the Scope 3 emissions reduction plan, while carbon emissions from the apparel supply chain account for one of the significant portion of Kmart’s Scope 3 emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehend how the apparel supply chain can contribute to meeting Kmart’s ambitious emissions reduction goals from Scope 3.

Solutions

Ruirong approached the challenge via a three-part process:

  • Investigate the situation of apparel supply chain: Check the current situation of apparel supply chain and energy management levels, then collect relatively detailed Tier 2 and Tier 3 data from spinning mills.
  • Product carbon footprint analysis for reference: Take one existing T-shirt order produced in an integrated plant at India as an example to analyze the carbon emissions of the entire life cycle with the difference in energy consumption between each processes of the yarn production.
  • Seek the chance of carbon reduction: A series of recommendations on Scope 3 emission reductions were proposed to engage in the climate action according to research and analysis results.

Potential Impact

Through the diligent efforts of Ruirong and the meticulous analysis of emission data, Kmart Group garnered invaluable insights into the carbon footprint and emission opportunities associated with their apparel products. These insights will serve as the foundation for devising targeted strategies which will enable Kmart to effectively contribute to their emission reduction goals, while also fostering sustainability within the apparel supply chain.
