Goals 

Samuel Kahn was tasked with reducing energy use at LADACIN. 

Solutions

Kahn worked on three main projects during his fellowship. The first was entering data for all ten facilities’ electricity and natural gas bills going back to the beginning of 2011 into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and Noesis Energy, which enabled Kahn to benchmark each building’s performance. The second was enrolling the three largest facilities in a free energy audit program and soliciting bids from Building Performance Institute approved energy-auditing firms to inspect the seven remaining facilities building envelopes. The third project Kahn worked on was making recommendations for immediate adjustments, like helping IT install PC energy management software and recommending that facilities replace expired 32watt t-8 fluorescent lamps with 28-watt t-8 fluorescent lamps.

Potential Impact

Other similar facilities (schools, offices and multifamily homes) that have undergone energy audits and implemented the recommended changes have saved up to 35 percent on their energy bills. In the case of LADACIN network that could be up to 400,000 kilowatt hours, 17,000 therms of natural gas, 274 metric tons of carbon and $78,000 inannual savings, the equivalent of taking up to 55 cars off the road.
