Larsen & Toubro Limited – Varna M – 2025

Varna expanded the Scope 3 emissions categories being reported, adding two new categories’capital goods and waste generated in operations’identified reduction strategies, and projected emissions till 2045 under business as usual and decarbonisation scenarios, supporting L&T’s climate action.

L&T aims to enhance its climate action by improving the measurement and management of Scope 3 emissions, which form a significant part of its overall carbon footprint. Accurate accounting, informed supplier engagement, and long-term planning are essential to meet sustainability targets. Varna’s work focused on establishing a structured approach for Scope 3 inventorisation, identifying reduction opportunities through global best practices, and developing projections to support L&T’s emission reduction strategies up to 2045.

Varna conducted greenhouse gas inventorisation for Scope 3 emissions, covering all categories relevant to L&T’s total Scope 3 footprint. She used the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard as a reference and reviewed emission factors from recognized industry databases to ensure accurate value. Additionally, she performed peer benchmarking for identifying reduction strategies adopted by top global construction companies, with a key focus on supplier engagement to reduce emissions from purchased goods in Category 1. Finally, she developed projections up to the year 2045 comparing business-as-usual and decarbonisation scenarios to guide L&T’s long-term sustainability planning.

By implementing a comprehensive Scope 3 accounting framework, L&T will be equipped to track and reduce its indirect emissions across the value chain. Varna’s work provides the tools and insights needed to prioritize emission reduction efforts, including engaging suppliers in key areas. The projections and benchmarking will enable L&T to set measurable targets, explore effective strategies, and advance its climate action goals.
