Lyft, Inc. – Matt Morenz Panopio – 2018

Goals

Lyft, the fastest growing rideshare company in the US, San Francisco based on-demand ride-sharing transportation company was founded on the belief that technology will enable us to dramatically reduce carbon emissions from the transportation system while improving the quality of life for all. The company has committed to providing carbon- neutral rides by becoming one of the world’s largest voluntary purchasers of carbon offsets. EDF Climate Corps fellow Matt Panopio was enlisted to accurately measure the company’s baseline carbon footprint and develop emission reduction strategies within its operations.

Solutions

Panopio collected activity data and identified critical sources of emissions across the value chain to calculate Lyft’s first baseline GHG emissions inventory. He developed a methodology to calculate vehicle emissions for subsequent years and explored strategies to achieve net zero emissions through renewable energy products and electric vehicle deployment.

Potential Impact

Panopio’s work has laid the foundation for future sustainability initiatives and carbon emissions reporting at Lyft. This will help to accelerate the growth of the clean energy economy and the increase in electric vehicle adoption.
