McDonald's – Runing Gao – 2024

Runing Gao identified renewable energy and storage solutions across McDonald’s stores, to enhance sustainability and profitability.

McDonald’s is challenged by the lack of standardized and actionable data to support its efforts in meeting China’s 3060 carbon targets. To address this, McDonald’s enlisted Runing Gao to explore and implement low-carbon and zero-carbon technologies, through innovative application technologies and enhanced customer interaction.

Gao approached McDonald’s challenge through a systematic three-step process: Identify sustainability goals and metrics for energy and carbon management. Gao established clear objectives for integrating solar and energy storage systems into McDonald’s operations, targeting benefits in energy production, financial savings, and carbon impact. Evaluate potential installation sites. Gao found a standard McDonald’s restaurant model, analyzing critical factors like sunlight exposure and energy consumption to evaluate optimal locations for solar and storage systems. Calculate financial and environmental benefits. She assessed the potential impact of various sustainability initiatives for McDonald’s, focusing on energy efficiency, economic benefits, and carbon footprint reduction.

By utilizing a combination of on-site renewable energy and battery storage, each McDonald’s store could significantly offset CO2 emissions and achieve notable annual revenue increases. While not all locations may be suitable for solar installations, this approach has the potential to meaningfully reduce McDonald’s overall carbon footprint across its extensive network of stores in China, contributing to both environmental sustainability and cost savings.
