MGM Resorts International – Hanna Rush – 2024

SummaryHanna worked with MGM Resorts International (MGM Resorts) to conduct a supply chain water risk assessment and develop a strategic roadmap for water stewardship in the supply chain.GoalsAs a leader in corporate water stewardship, MGM Resorts is committed to taking a holistic approach to assess water risk to their business. As MGM Resorts expands to a water stewardship focus beyond the water footprint of direct operations, MGM Resorts is looking further down the value chain to assess water risk in the supply chain. MGM Resorts enlisted EDF Climate Corps Fellow Hanna Rush to conduct a supply chain water risk assessment and develop a strategic roadmap for water stewardship in MGM Resorts’ supply chain.SolutionsHanna completed two major projects throughout the summer to help MGM Resorts understand its business risk as it relates to water in the supply chain. 1. Supply Chain Water Risk Assessment: Hanna conducted stakeholder meetings, academic research, and analyzed procurement data to assess MGM Resorts’ highest risk commodities and services within the supply chain. She identified the highest risk industries, then prioritized the highest risk suppliers, and finally assessed the highest risk locations within MGM Resorts’ supply chain. Throughout the summer, Hanna engaged directly with MGM Resorts’ high risk suppliers to assess their understanding of water risk in their direct operations and supply chains. 2. Strategic Roadmap for Water Stewardship in the Supply Chain: Hanna developed a phased, strategic roadmap for MGM Resorts’ supply chain water stewardship by conducting a comprehensive assessment of MGM Resorts’ current work to reduce water risk in the supply chain, competitor benchmarking research, and further research into best practices for companies to reduce supply chain water risk. This roadmap will be used by the Global Procurement team to guide next steps for supply chain water stewardship.Potential ImpactHanna’s Risk Assessment work identified current water risk and anticipated future risks to MGM Resorts’ supply chain to prevent supply chain disruptions and potential financial impacts caused by decreased water availability. The Roadmap provides contextualized and comprehensive strategies to enhance MGM Resorts’ supplier engagement efforts and reduce overall water-related business risk.
