Northrop Grumman – Reino Hyyppa – 2022

Goals

Northrop Grumman, a technology company focused on global security and human discovery, is an EPA SmartWay partner and utilizes ground shipment data collected, managed and provided by its third-party logistics provider. EDF Climate Corps fellow Reino Hyyppa was brought on by the company to develop Scope 3, Category 4 emissions guidance for the company and track, validate, and reduce inbound transportation emissions from Northrop Grumman’s domestic logistics network.

Solutions

Reino approached this challenge using a three-part process:

  • Validate Scope 3, Category 4 GHG emissions baseline using previously reported data from the company’s third-party logistics vendor. After calculating GHG emissions from raw shipment data, and reviewing the methodology previously used by the vendor to calculate GHG emissions, Reino identified an error in how these emissions were previously calculated.
  • Develop correct methodology for calculating inbound transportation emissions using the WRI’s GHG Protocol guidance for calculating Scope 3, Category 4 emissions. Reino developed an inventory management model that provides a detailed framework to measure emissions from inbound shipment to Northrop Grumman’s facilities using freight invoice data.
  • Provide recommendations to reduce Scope 3 emissions from sources relevant to the company’s business operations and that support the evolution of its supply chain SmartWay program by prioritizing logistic services providers based on their emissions and overall fleet performance.

Potential Impact

The administration of the Scope 3, Category 4 Inventory Management Plan will help the company accurately evaluate and address emissions generated from inbound shipments from the company’s domestic supply chain. Synchronization of efforts between sectors and the company’s third-party logistics provider will lead to smoother execution of emission abatement projects.
