Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation – Carlo Alberto Amadei – 2018

Goals

For any pharmaceutical company, Scope 3 emissions account for roughly three to four times contributions from Scope 1 and 2 emissions combined. That’s why Novartis made it a priority to monitor its Scope 3 emissions. The company wanted to model both upstream and downstream activities to identify emissions hotspots. EDF Climate Corps fellow Carlo Amadei was hired to help Novartis locate hotspots and create a plan for transitioning to a new way to track total carbon emissions.

Solutions

Amadei modeled the Scope 3 emissions using two approaches:

  • First, he created an interactive dashboard that enables users to visualize Scope 3 emission data and to detect hotspots caused by specific Novartis’ activities
  • Second, Amadei created an advanced predictive hybrid-method that can calculate carbon emissions using primary data from both the carbon disclosure project and from the web. He then established a possible refinement of the model by creating ad-hoc google forms, which could also be used for supplier’s engagement.

Potential Impact

Using the interactive dashboards, Amadei identified hotspots responsible for significant emissions. Supply chain activities and service providers in four countries were selected as opportunities for participating in engagement initiatives to reduce Novartis’ environmental impact. Having the carbon emissions modeling generated by the hybrid-method, predictive tool, Novartis can now keep track of its sustainability targets and engagement initiatives.
