PPD – Danielle Dooley – 2016

Goals

PPD enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Danielle Dooley to compile and assess all of the energy data for its global operations. The goal was to create an easily accessible database to house its resource use and climate impact data, and aggregate the information for a 2015 Environmental Assessment. Danielle was also tasked with reviewing and editing the formal sustainability policy.

Solutions

Danielle reached out to other departments in search of a transparent compilation of PPD’s environmental impact data. After careful review, she cleaned the numbers in preparation for database integration. Danielle determined that a majority of PPD’s emissions were Scope 1 and 2, generated from company vehicles, natural gas heating and purchased electricity. Having this information, she created a benchmark to set additional targets for emissions reductions and possible behavioral changes necessary to reduce emissions. After consulting with her supervisor to determine the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department’s database requirements, Danielle worked with another department to modify an existing in-house database to support their storage needs.

Potential Impact

Danielle provided PPD with an easily accessible, aggregated database of 2015 emissions. By identifying the intra-agency contacts necessary to sustain information collection, she positioned PPD to develop protocols for working with company contacts, giving the EHS team the ability to target areas for reducing emissions moving forward.
