QVC – Manuel Curiel – 2019

Goals

Qurate Retail GroupSM comprises eight leading retail  brands – QVC®, HSN®, Zulily®, Ballard Designs®, Frontgate®, Garnet Hill®, Grandin Road®, and RyllaceTM – all dedicated to providing a Third Way to Shop®, beyond transactional ecommerce or traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Qurate Retail Group enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Manuel Curiel to provide recommendations for the implementation, measurement and verification of Energy Conservation Measures at its headquarters located in West Chester, Pa.

Solutions

To develop a clear picture of existing efforts, Curiel evaluated building performance data, interviewed building operators, and created a regression-model baseline of the building’s energy consumption allowing the Energy Efficiency team to evaluate their future energy-saving efforts. He then turned his attention to available trend data from the Buildings Management System and conducted in-field measurements to identify top-level recommendations. The analyzed projects included facilities systems improvements such as lighting and HVAC setbacks when the building is unoccupied; boiler combustion and Domestic Hot Water generation optimization; and participation in a Demand Response program.

Potential Impact

Implementation of the proposed projects at Qurate Retail Group’s headquarters has the potential to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 1,618 metric tons and save 2,890,749 kilowatt hours while also reducing costs. Qurate Retail Group plans to replicate these projects in additional US facilities across its family of brands to increase the impact of companywide sustainability initiatives and to achieve greenhouse gas reductions across their building portfolio.
